VMA Winners (plus who should have really won!)

I, like the rest of America, spent last night watching the MTV Video Music Awards. First of all let me say that Adele was robbed! "Rolling in the Deep" was, in my opinion, THE song of 2011 with countless remakes, remixes, mashups etc. How is it that the song/video only won behind the scenes awards? Ugh! Come on MTV!! Adele looked beautiful and not-at-all-pressed meanwhile in the audience. I guess she's used to being snubbed and slept on in America by now.

Beyond that I have to say that I really enjoyed the show! The performances were stellar including ones from Lady Gaga dressed as her scary, booze-swigging, alter ego Jo Calderon, and the newly pregnant Beyonce who was glowing and sounded great performing "Love on Top"! Her hubby Jay-Z and Kanye even rocked it out with a high energy performance of "Otis". I liked Kevin Hart's brief interludes and overall thought it was one of the better VMA's of late.

Now on the awards!! (Agree or disagree, these are my opinions folks!)

Katy Perry, “Firework”

Ok. I'll give Katy this one but really just based on the song. Quite honestly all of her videos look the same to me -- party scenes full of half naked pretend teens in angst. We get it Katy. She should definitely try a new concept next go round.

BEST FEMALE VIDEO
Lady Gaga, “Born This Way”

LOVE Gaga. And LOVE "Born This Way" as a song. But I'm sorry. The video for "Born This Way" was disturbing and creepy on many levels! The video just attempted too much for a 5 min clip. Not a fan at all.

Here's where I think Adele was robbed. Her video was beautifully done and fit the song amazingly. Also it was so different than the usual videos in rotation. (when MTV actually decides to play music that is..) She definitely should have won this award.

BEST NEW ARTIST
Tyler, The Creator, “Yonkers”

God Bless Tyler the creator and his merry band of misfits OKTBVGTYY...or whatever but NO NO NO way in hell he should've won new artist! His songs were never in real rotation anywhere and I dare say even MTV only played his super controversial video late night (do they still do that?) If it had been his crew-mate Frank Ocean, I would have agreed - as he had a very successful year and landed as one of the few cameos on the Watch the Throne album. Meanwhile, Wiz Khalifa had a great year after years of grinding for a spot. You can't deny what a mega-hit "Black and Yellow" was. Foster the People also would have been a good choice to win this award as their first single is currently in the Billboard top 10 and is just a great record in general.

BEST MALE VIDEO
Justin Bieber, “U Smile”

Icant.com. MTV just can't get enough of this child. And they were clearly biased with this choice. Every video nominee in this category (Kanye "All of the Lights", Cee-lo "F- You", Bruno Mars "Grenade" etc etc) deserved to win this more than Bieber.

BEST COLLABORATION
Katy Perry featuring Kanye West, “E.T.”

Although I love Kanye, this was the weakest collaboration of the bunch. Kanye and Katy have ZERO chemistry as evident from that awkward acceptance speech and hug. "Look at Me Now" was one of the biggest hits of the year - Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes slaughtered each of their verses. Kanye and Rihanna made magic with "All of the Lights" and have great chemistry. And not to even get started with "Give Me Everything Tonight" where Pitbull and Ne-Yo bounced off of each other seemlessly and got my party started night after night this summer. Ill-awarded-award indeed.

BEST HIP-HOP VIDEO
Nicki Minaj, “Super Bass”

I really like Nicki Minaj but personally hated the song and hated the video even more. Beyond that this award could have gone to any other of the nominees and I would have been ok.

BEST ROCK VIDEO
Foo Fighters, “Walk”

I like Foo-Fighters and if this award had have been based on the video for "Rope" (which was dope) I would have agreed. It wasn't, however, and I really think Foster the People should have won for "Pumped Up Kicks"

BEST POP VIDEO
Britney Spears, “Till the World Ends”

I guess so, MTV. I feel like they just gave her this award so she would show up. We all know and Britney has just been going through the motions with most of this stuff lately. I don't mind the song however.

Well duh.

I was so tired that I fell asleep on the Billboard Awards last night BUT saw all the important performances online this morning. Britney and Rihanna did a sexed-up version of S&M, then Brit came back out to do "Till the World Ends" with Nicki Minaj later in the show. Pitbull, Kesha, Cee-lo, Black eyed peas, Far East Movement, and Taio Cruz all had cute performances. Beyonce killed it with her performance of "Run the World". I'm not a fan of recycled beats but I have to say with the video and all-out media blitz of the song, Beyonce just may have something. Peep the performance below:

Last night I attended the Tribeca Film Festival Screening of Karl Lagerfield's short film project starring Rachel Bilson for Magnum ice cream, a huge sponsor of the festival. It was packed with fashion heavyweights including (the) Anna Wintour, Christian Siriano, and of course Karl Lagerfield who made his trademark over-the-top grand entrance! I wore a Nicole Miller print dress, Chanel necklace, Gucci belt, Hermes bracelet, and CL Bianca pumps.

Last night I spun the New Yorkers for Children Spring Gala!! Luxury Indian designer Soigne k (pictured below) dressed me for the event!

I paired her flapper inspired frock with black Christian Louboutin Bianca pumps, a Black Balenciaga clutch, gold Noir earrings, and a cluster of gold bangles. I'll post more pictures from the event soon!

Last Night at...The Braxton Family Values Premiere Party!

Last week, I DJ'ed the premiere party for the new Toni Braxton reality show on WeTv called Braxton Family Values. The show features Toni as well as her 5 beautiful look-alike sisters and her lovely mother. They screened the show at the party and it looks really interesting. I'll definitely be watching! You can find out more about the show here. The event was held at the chic new London Hotel in West Hollywood and was a lot of fun! Pictures below..

For the event, I wore a hot pink Halston Heritage "Be Mine" dress I got from Rent The Runway, with black patent Manolo Blahnik sandals, a plexiglass Gucci belt, a long Chanel necklace, and my black Hermes Collier de Chien cuff. Simple and chic.

We were on the rooftop so of course once the sun went down, it got really cold. I had to throw on a cute Vince leather jacket.

Earlier this month I spun the opening of the J.W. Marriott in Chicago. Dancers from the Joffrey Ballet performed with me throughout the night and actress Emmy Rossum wowed the crowd by performing a few songs. All in all it was a really chic night. Pictures below!

Last month I had the opportunity to guest DJ at Madison Square Garden, one of the most famous arenas in the world for one of the biggest games of the NBA season - the New York Knicks vs the Boston Celtics. It was NOTHING short of AMAZING!! For one, the Knicks are an awesome team for the first time in many years, secondly the Boston-Knicks rivalry is one of the most storied, and finally the game was CRAZY with the scored tied at the end with an almost buzzer beating 3 point shot.. Pictures below!

Last night I attended the launch of Ferragamo WORLD at their flagship store on 5th Ave. They originally wanted to dress me for the event but the clothes they sent didn't fit sooooo I had to be industrious! I paired a simple red French Connection sheath dress with a black Ferragamo belt, black tights and black Bianca Christian Louboutin pumps.

I am soooo excited to have been named one of US Weekly Magazine's Top 25 Stylish New Yorkers!! They feted me and the other honorees at a huge party at Lavo new York on Wednesday. Other celebs on the list include Mary J Blige, Iman, Yaya DaCosta, Swizz Beats, Bethenny Frankel, and Rachel Ray!

I spun the party celebrating the occasion! Swizz Beats decided to come and jump on the mic and the place went crazy!

Friday I spun at the Versace boutique on 5th Ave for Fashion's Night Out. The party was so much fun!

In head to toe Versace with my friend Lexi!

My 6 inch Versace platforms were gorge but by the end of my 4-hr set I was damn near crippled lol!

Saturday I spun the Alexander Wang after party! It was EPIC!!!! Alex took over a parking lot on 10th ave and turned it into a full-on amusement park, complete with bumper cars and a merry-go-round! My DJ booth was on a huge led-lit stage!

The WEEN Awards on Thursday were simply beautiful. Women of color in the entertainment industry came together to honor each other's contributions to our communities. Awards receipents included Nia Long, Angie Martinez, LeToya Luckett, and many others.

I wore a Diane von Furstenberg "Tiny Dancer" dress with Lia Sophia Red Carpet Collection Jewelry and black patent Christian Louboutin Rolando Pumps to the event! My nails were done in Essie's Lilacism.

Taste of Tennis Pictures!

Last week Masud and I spun the annual Taste of Tennis Event together. NYC’s Top Chefs and the world’s greatest tennis players, including superstar Andy Roddick, joined together to showcase their culinary skills at the event. In between sets, Masud and I ate amazing food and drank signature cocktails to our heart's content. The event benefitted the New York Junior Tennis League, the largest tennis and education-themed community organization in the United States.

Alternative Apparel is one of my favorite lines of high-end tees and tanks. Last Thursday I deejayed and emceed their Unsigned Artist Competition at Le Poisson Rouge! The judges included Kelly Cutrone, star of one of my favorite reality shows, Kell On Earth; Alternative's founder, Greg Altermann; and other top industry insiders.

The competition featured four really dope up and coming bands from around the country! I absolutely love finding new great bands so this was right up my alley. The finalists were: M.Anifest, The Peach Kings, Button Willow Locomotive, and The Lighthouse and The Whaler. Each of the bands performed a remake of a designated song AND one original song. I was blown away by the performances. Everyone was really amazing!

In the end, The Peach Kings (who would seriously give Beth Ditto and The Gossip a run for their money..) won! Check them out here!

In September of 1977 The Paradise Garage, one of the worlds most influential clubs, opened up in New York's Greenwich Village, at 84 King Street. No one knew back then that this club would live for a decade and that it would also give name to it's own music genre - "Garage." As famous and legendary as the club itself was it's DJ - the late Larry Levan.
